LOCAL ARTIST STUDIO RESIDENCY

The Local Artist Studio Residency is awarded to a local DC artist with direct ties to our community. This pilot program awards artists with six months of dedicated studio space in our newly renovated former garage nestled in our neighborhood garden, a stipend, staff and curatorial support, professional development opportunities, and a culminating exhibition in our gallery.

The Nicolson Project is thrilled to welcome GKJcreates (AKA George Kevin Jordan) as the inaugural artist awarded a Local Artist Studio Residency program. George is a multidisciplinary artist based in Washington, DC. He works mostly in water-based mediums like gouache, watercolor, and ink. His work pulls from his pop culture saturated days of the 80s and 90s, when anime, comics, cartoons, and music had more of an influence on kids than their own parents. Think bright colors, big ideas, and lots of fun!

He examines Black and Black/Queer life in a variety of situations from mundane domestic settings, to exotic locales, mythologies and folklore. The work may end up on watercolor paper, napkins, cardboard, or a multitude of materials. His bright palettes and easy paint strokes recall the whimsical, playful ways in which children create art.
