Luis Vasquez La Roche

DIGITAL RESIDENT \ JUNE 2027

Vasquez La Roche is an Afro-Trinidadian-Venezuelan interdisciplinary artist and scholar whose work materializes across performance, installation, video, sound, sculpture, and painting. Their practice is grounded in Orisha traditions, ritual, carnival, the power of oral history, personal and historical memory, and the tangible and intangible legacies passed down through generations.

Their work is an offering to their ancestors. A space where the supernatural and the everyday coexist. By conjuring spaces where Black imagination is boundless, they aim to honor their past while dreaming radically toward our futures. For them, magical realism is not an escape from reality, but a declaration that Black life has always contained multitudes, mysteries, and miracles that defy erasure.

Their works have been exhibited, screened, and performed in institutions such as LACE (CA), AIR Gallery (NY), The Carr Center (MI), Cornell University (NY), Institute of Contemporary Art (VA), Bronx Museum (NY), Deakin University (Australia), La Vulcanizadora (Colombia), Alice Yard (Trinidad and Tobago), Hervey Bay Gallery (Australia), Rockhampton Museum (Australia), Fresh Milk (Barbados), Grimmwelt Museum (Germany), the Shed (NY), The Momentary (AR),

University of Maryland (MD), Rhode Island School of Design (RI), Museo of Arte Contemporáneo (Puerto Rico), Documenta 15 (Germany), and the Kochi-Muziris Biennale (India). Residencies include Open Ateliers Zo AIR (Netherlands), Beta Local Itinerant Seminar (Puerto Rico), Mare Residency (Puerto Rico), Mar de Islas (Puerto Rico), Visible Records
