july 7 - july 10, 2020

Tia Wilson is a traditional artist currently living in Maryland who explores themes of identity, current events, character, and relationships throughout her portraiture. She uses paint, colored pencils, yarn, and embroidery thread as her main mediums. Tia began her work in 2016, drawing inspiration from her family and friends.  She enjoys attempting to make connections with the audience through visual means. Tia will be working toward her BFA at Rochester Institute of Technology in 2020.

Sugarcoated

The series of work I have created during this time is titled “Sugarcoated”. As of right now, it consists of three works discussing prevalent personal and social topics which have been sugarcoated. The first artwork is untitled, but speaks about the COVID pandemic and how it affects others. The second artwork discusses graduation and personally, the bridge to adulthood. I see college as the first step into freedom and the “adult world”. The references to cartoons symbolize moving on from childhood. The final artwork is titled “Strange Fruit” and discusses police brutality and racial attacks in America. Throughout all these pieces, the popsicles are meant to symbolize freedom.
